Good Saturday evening to you!

Only seventeen days into the month of universal self-betterment comes Ditch Your New Year’s Resolutions Day. I can only imagine that for most it’s met with either a panicked gasp or sigh of relief. For me, it’s neither. Rather than go down the resolutions rabbit hole this year, ending up mired in self-criticism, I chose to avoid it altogether.

I read about the #OneWord365 project earlier this month — “focus on who you want to be rather than what you want to do” — and immediately it set my thoughts in motion. Sure, there are loads of things I want to accomplish in 2015, but those are more to-dos than resolutions. Focusing on one word will (hopefully) ensure I make time for and nurture myself.

A constant worrier and over-analyzer whose brain is rarely silent, the word I’ve chosen is breathe.

Breathe and… be content with where I am at this moment … embrace the things that make me uniquely me … be grateful for our many blessings … and most of all, let go of what I can’t control and trust in the larger plan. It might be wishy-washy, but I’m committed to following through, however challenging that may be.

If you were to choose one word for the next 365 348 days, what would it be?

In other news, huzzah for a long weekend, Championship Sunday, and my love’s birthday! I had to smile reviewing my cookbooks for the best angel food recipe and finding my handwritten notes: “birthday celebration for 2014 — perfect,” “birthday 2013 — he says this is the ultimate angel food cake,” “January 2012 — best angel food yet were his exact words!” Can you tell it’s his favorite?

I am so fortunate to spend the rest of my days with him, and promised an extra large portion of cake and berries if there isn’t a lot of this tomorrow afternoon.

On that note, the oven timer is going off. I have a dark chocolate-flecked angel food to check on! Have a wonderful weekend, and don’t forget to scroll down for the week’s links.

      Ah, this is another great word, Allie. I think this plays a lot into self-love and being mindful of what we each are personally in need of. And of course this varies from day to day, meaning the freedom to do this/feel this/eat this/be this will change regularly. This would take a lot of soul-searching for me; though, something I should definitely do more of! Thanks for sharing. I wish you all the best in 2015… the year of freedom!

    Excellent choice of a “word” for 2015, and beautiful words to describe it’s meaning for you. I have found for the last several weeks That I have frequently and out loud been telling myself to “focus”. Very similar to your “breathe”, I want to let go of the extraneous worries, allowing me to complete a difficult task, free my mind to creatively problem solve, or to focus on the beauty and love that surrounds me. Great concept; thanks for sharing!

      Isn’t it a nice alternative? “Free the mind to creatively problem solve, or focus on the surrounding beauty and love” — ditto! There is so much information and stimulation at our fingertips every waking hour of the day, it’s hard, at least for me, to productively compartmentalize and to actually *allow* myself to focus on the goods things instead of the negative. Clearly “focus” is a contender for 2016… Thanks, Sandy, and here’s to making your word work for you!
